Was that from the hologram or a person?

Such sage advice.

from a person

It amazes me how many customers come in to upgrade because BB is damaged they are getting another BB and want to know if we can get contacts. normaly we can't. I ask did you have a current back up. Most " I never got around to it"

It is so simple too. You can set DM to do an auto back up too. I run one once a week, whether it needs it or not.

I suspect there are a lot of BB owners that never even install the Desktop Manager.

Interesting - I've found the opposite. Every day, I see more and more users signing up for OTA sync just to backup their Blackberries Contacts and stuff.

Maybe it's because they've already learnt once?

Any data that you consider important should be backed up regardless of where you store the data. YMMV but I consider my contacts (among other data) important. BB's are very reliable in my experience but that doesn't mean that a hardware failure can't occur. Nor does it mean that you won't lose or break your BB.

BES wireless sync (and backup) also works really well.

For a company-owned BB, typical backups would be either the synced copy of the data on a company-owned BES server, or a backup via Desktop Manager on a company-owned PC. In the event of job loss, the device and the backups will no longer be accessible by the (former) employee.

If the intent is to have a copy of your contacts following job loss (they could be a great resource for finding another job), you should backup your data in a way that you'll have access to without your former employer's cooperation. Keep in mind that in a situation like this, the data is often considered company property, and taking a copy with you for post-employment use could be considered theft.
