Default Outbound e-mail for BIS accounts

Specific carrier in this case is AT&T, but the question applies to other US based cellular carriers for BIS as well.

Do outbound e-mails on BIS accounts go through the cellular providers mail servers or does it attempt to send them through the server defined on the BIS account?

They go through RIM to the specified provider's servers. They only go through AT&T's servers if you use the att.blackberry.net email account or another at&t email address, and even then they go through RIM first.

So are you saying that outbound SMTP e-mail from a BB with a BIS defined account will actually be sent through RIM's SMTP servers?

Or are you saying that the network traffic goes through RIM's network (like all BB communication does) but the actual outbound SMTP goes throught he account specified for the BIS e-mail defined?
