Default Data with tethering-will I get charged?

Please Login to Remove!

So I'm talking to this unfortunately clueless AT&T guy at the store. For example, he couldn't get past the point that I can use my iPhone without the iPhone plan, even though I said several times that I simply unlocked it.

Anyways, I was down at the store for the sole point of getting my BlackBerry set up with a data plan so I could tether it with my laptop. So I just asked him to hook me up with an unlimited data plan for my BlackBerry. He said sure, and set it all up for $30/month. Just to make sure, I asked "This will let me tether, right?".

He said not really, that it costs $60 per month for them to officially set me up with a tethering plan. Next, he said that if I looked it up online, I could probably find a way to do it on the down low. He said it wasn't illegal to do that, but I shouldn't talk about it to anyone.

Now, I'm just standing there very confused. I had heard those horror stories where people rack up thousands of dollars thinking they could tether with their data plan, but they couldn't.

After trying to question him about the charges, he just made me more confused so I left without a clue as to whether I'll get charged a bunch of money for using my BlackBerry tethered to my laptop.

So, guys, will I get charged?

If tethering was a show stopper and you're looking to beat the system without risk, I'd take it back. The $30/mo plan is without tethering the $60/mo plan is with 5gB of tethering data.

You can search this forum and try others like howardforums.com to see what others are experiencing.

Thanks, mate-looks like I made the right decision canceling it yesterday when I hadn't gotten an answer.

Yea, I wish the cost of data was less expensive especially for us "seldom need it" users. The good news, depending on where you live, is Xohm is being rolled out. No love for us in NYC yet. The rates are much more reasonable.
Right now I have a laptop unlimited data connect card. I'm planning to give it up for tethering to the Bold as it is only a $15 add for BES accounts.
