Question Newbie

Please Login to Remove!

OK, assume I know nothing about Blackberry's because I dont.

I am getting the Storm in a week or two and coming from TREO 700wx.

I have a bunch of questions..and could use any advise that you want to provide:

1) Will the BB sync with Outlook?
2) What is the setup like?
3) What's BES, BIP..would I need anything, additional programs to sync with Outlook?
4) Looking to sync personal contacts, Tasks on outlook as well as a shared folder calendar. Is this an issue (I know I had to purchase a 3rd party program for my treo.)
5) Will Xcel, Word work with BB? Can I edit it?
6) Are there other programs available for BB that you can suggest to download?
7) Ringtones/themes/games available?
8) Is there a backup program for the BB? I currently use Sprite backup for treo.

Thanks..I'm sure I'll have more when I actually get he phone.

A new york lawyers who says he knows nothing?

You're not a lawyer if you say that, or not like any I know

1. Yes, and seamlessly.

2. Like this, to sync:
Quote:
Step 1 Install Blackberry Desktop Manager Manager from
BlackBerry - Desktop Software - BlackBerry Desktop Software at BlackBerry.com

Step2
Connect blackberry to your PC using a USB cable and let blackberry device driver install. When device driver install is complete, it will alert "hardware installed successfully" in your windows task tray.

Step3
Run Blackberry Desktop software and choose SYNCHRONIZE option.

Step4
Now choose CONFIGURE and you may select CONTACTS, CALENDAR, NOTES, and TASKS databases by clicking check boxes next to each. After you select each item, it will ask which application you would like to sync it with, you will choose OUTLOOK for all.

Step5
Now click OK out of all windows until you are at the main blackberry desktop manager screen. click SYNCHRONIZE. Make sure that the SYCHRONIZE ORGANIZER DATA check box is checked. Now click SYNCHRONIZE NOW to begin synchronization.
3. Are you on a corporate BES plan or a personal BIS plan?

4. BIS won't sync folders, BES will. You need to figure out which you have?

5. With any BB device with OS 4.5 and greater, yes. Storm included. You will have DocumentsToGo which allows editing of Word and Excel documents.

6. Yep, lots, too many to list. Ask what you need, though. Look in our Aftermarket Software section for LOTS of applications.

7. Yep. Media Section here for themes.

I suggest you search before you ask and read the FAQ. Many of your questions most likely have been asked more than once.

Also read the user guide that comes with your device.

And like any good attorney (is that a slip of the tongue?) you should also know the meaning of research, research, and more research!

Read up on BIS/BES differences. Looks like I'll probably run BIS. Does that mean I will be unable to sync a public calendar?

Will all my syncing (Xcel files, etc) all be done wirelessly?

Sounds like your best sync option will be through a USB cable to your computer.

On BIS, nothing will sync wirelessly.

Calendar, Memos, Address Book and Tasks will sync via Desktop Manager and the USB cable.

Excel files, just drag and drop from your Media Card, using the Media Card as a removable drive to your PC.

Can you sync excel and word files on a laptop with a blackberry storm? I can send files from the laptop to the phone using media manager but can't figure out how to sync the files when i update them on the laptop.
