Default Options advice please

Hi I'm Cath, I was wondering if I could canvass some opinions about Blackberry phones.
Now I bought a very cheap second hand 7290 on Orange PAYG from ebay. yes I know, I know, about buying phones and stuff from ebay but there was method in my madness! I never expected it to work as a blackberry really but I was curious to find out what all the fuss was as I am supposed to be getting a new contract phone/sim for Christmas. I didn't really fancy the blackberry at first and was leaning more towards the iphone. However now I have actually had my hands on a Blackberry I have decided I want one.

Now my questions, lol

I know the one I got is a very old model but I would like to get one as close to the 7290 as possible. I was wondering what model would that would be?

Are there any uk networks/deals that are better than the others?

any advice gratefully received, thanks

Hi Cath

It will be hard to find an older model BB free on a contract in the UK. The oldest would probably be the 8100 pearl.

If you really want an older model you could purcahse a second hand one and run it on a pay monthly sim only deal with a blackberry tariff added to it. For example o2's simplicity sim starts at 15 and the Blackberry Bolt on is 10. The other networks have similar deals.

When buying a used device ensure that the PIN has been released from the previous users account or you will have problems setting up your email.

If you were to get a contract go for the latest and greatest I would suggest a Pearl, curve, Bold or possibly a storm.

Thank you I will keep that in mind. I have no idea if the guy I bought it from has released the pin or not, but its a cool wee phone.

When I can up to town I will take a wander around all the shops and see whats on offer.

Release-date-wise that would be the 8700 but be aware that the 7290 was the very last BB of that design. you wold actually have to find older models to find the same style housing and keyboard. The 8700's design is quite different.

What is it about the 7290 that you like? It might help to know this to make a more meaningful recommendation.

I have MS and using most mobiles can be a huge pain at times but the 7290 is a lot easier on my hands I think probably because of the size of it. I dont have to just use one hand. The click wheel and the non shiney non, slippery texture of the actual casing also helps. I have lost count of how many Video Ipods I have broken or drowned because I havent been able to keep a grip on them!

I am just heading off to town to have a look at some of the other models and see if there is one I like. Then I will come home and have a further think on it and let you know what I find. Thanks for the imput.

Ok boys and girls, I have been mulling it over all weekend and I am thinking I should go for one of the Curve's or Bold's. My hubby who hates new technology is quite happy to use the 7290 just as a plain old texting/phoning pay as you go mobile. Which is all it is at present. Turns out the person I bought it from has no idea who the IMEI/PIN account holder is to contact them to release the account, Why? Thats right he got from ebay!

So after half an hour in the Vodaphone shop I discovered that I can get a BB for free with an 18 month 35-40 contract. Which I must admit is a bit daunting for me as I have always been a pay as you go sort of Gal. I know it makes more sense financially to get a contract as I am currently feeding my mobile up to 40 per month (sometimes more but shh dont tell hubby! lol) most months as it is anyway.
From what I can tell most UK tariff plans for the Blackberry are roughly about the same. Anyone have a recommended service provider for the UK?
What I am looking for is of course email & internet access unlimited, Phone say 500 mins per month, sms not so important but in the region of 300 pm?

My brother is trying to talk me out of it, he reckons I should just buy a mobile internet dongle for my Lappy but he seems to forget that my laptop is huge and it doesn't fit in my purse or pocket like a shiney new Blackberry would! lol

So thoughts anyone? thanks in advance as well!
