annoying firewall issues.
Every once in a while I install an app to my Pearl and when i launch it, I get the error message that the app is connecting to a location both within and outside the firewall which is prohibited by my IT policy. I have no IT policy on my BB, so this doesn't make sense. If I turn off the firewall, that will allow the app to work. My questions are:
1. what danger am I potentially setting my self up for if I run a BIS BB with the firewall disabled??
2. The BB is not subject to the same issues that a regular computer is w/o a firewall enabled is it?
Also, 3. what causes that error message anyway?? and can editing app permissions in the security screen keep apps from throwing this error? Thanks for the help.

You're totally certain that you don't have an IT policy? Have you checked in Options->Security? Don't just assume that you don't.

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry 8100 Pearl)

I bought this BlackBerry new from a T Mobile store. It is my personal unit. There is no IT policy on it.

That wasn't the question Have you checked Options->Security? It would not be the first time that something wierd has happened at a wireless store.

I'm not a blackberry newbie, I am capable of telling whether my BB has an IT policy on it and it does not. All I want is a little bit of help. Thank you.

Head over to Options -> Security Options -> Firewall and check if it is enabled.

If this is your personal BB you can disabled it.

but if you disable the firewall then you get the nag screen each time you try to use apps like opera mini.

anyway, i don't think anyone has answered the original question about the it policy. when i first got my BB i saw this issue and asked the same question. i got the same answers about checking for an it policy even thoug it was a brand new phone on a BIS account. i went so far as clearing the phone and reloading the OS. that didn't help either. i finally just the removed the apps that were giving the problem and left it at that. i just concluded that the apps were not well written and let it go at that. if there is a better explaination, i'd like to hear it.

Opera Mini is the only App I have seen that gives you the screen, if you enable keep the firewall enabled apps like WeatherBug Direct will not work correctly, so you have to pick you posion there.

I have seen on some our Business BlackBerries, (8830's from Alltel) if you go to the Firewall screen it has a red lock on it and those were new BlackBerries with BIS acounts.
