Question To Storm or not to Storm?

Please Login to Remove!

Hi, all. I have Verizon as my carrier, need a smartphone, and am very seriously considering a BlackBerry. I work at a government agency that uses GroupWise and I use Outlook at home. Because of the way our network security is set up at work, the only viable option I have for a smartphone is either a Palm device (I've had it with the company) or a BB.

I played with the Storm at a VZW store and I'm not exactly thrilled with the touch screen keyboard. I rather like the 'clickable' screen but I can't see what I'm typing. I'll be doing a bit of data input (Word docs) and that setup just doesn't work for me.

Does anyone know anything about the Niagara that's supposed to be coming out for VZW in May? Is it the CDMA version of the Bold? Any opinions on whether it's worth waiting for? Many thanks.

Did you look at the Curve? Not a bad device either if you need something now and don't like the Storm. OS version 4.5 has Docs to Go included with which you can read/edit Excel and Word.

Keep in mind that once you put it on the Government BES, it will most likely be locked down tight and the IT Policy will limit what you can do, such as connecting to your home PC and Outlook. Also, once on BES, nothing is personal any longer. I never recommend putting a personal device on the company BES for that reason.

Thanks for the response. I don't have email that I need to sync so I'll most likely connect with a USB cable (just for calendar & contacts). I could go with the Curve but I don't mind waiting. The Bold seems like a really nice device and it looks like it has a bigger screen. If that's what the Niagara will be, I can probably wait for a few more months.

might not be able to anything other than what they allow. don't count on connecting to a pc or syncing contacts and calendar from your home pc either. sounds like you need to chat with the bes admin.

I'm currently using Intellisync to pull calendar & contact info (one-way only) from the GroupWise system at work onto my Palm via USB cable. I was under the impression that BlackBerry Desktop Manager allows the same kind of functionality. Is that incorrect?

You can use Desktop Manager to sync via cable but that won't get you email. I'm guessing if BB is an option that they have a BES?

Googling it seems to indicate that's the case. It's not worth it to me since I'm not willing to even consider a CDMA carrier in the first place. YMMV as your evaluation of worth is clearly based on different criteria.

That's exactly what I'm looking for. Thanks! As long as I can get my work & personal calendars consolidated on one device, I'm happy. I'm sure there is a BES at work since BB's are the only wireless email devices they support. I didn't want a work BB because that just lets them monitor my personal stuff.

Thanks for all the input, everybody! I've been with VZW for a number of years now because it's the most reliable carrier in my area. I think I'll bide my time & wait for the Niagara to come out.
