I have gmail app on my pearl. When does it use up data? When a new email arrives? When it is opened?

Also, I have a lot of old emails in my gmail account (6000+). Will this affect my data usage? Should I delete old emails, or is there a setting that can limit the number that show up on the blackberry app? When I scroll through old emails, does this use data?

any tips /suggestions appreciated.
