Default Contacts updates don't transfer between computers

Please Login to Remove!

I synch my Pearl 8110 to my computer at work (non-BES) and at home. For example, I updated one contact (A) on my home computer and another (B) on my BB. I synched (sank?) and I know that contact A updated on my home computer updated to my BB. (Not sure about B; will have to confirm when I get home.)

When I got to work though, neither of them updated the contact info on my work computer. I made a minor change to A on the BB and did another synch, and then it updated my work computer.

Although B has different content on my BB and my work computer, the work computer is not updating and I am not getting a conflict notice when I synch.

Both computers have the desktop manager set to synch both ways with the device and notify me of conflicts.

Since changes may occur at work, at home, or on the BB, I would naturally prefer that the most recent updates be transferred between all devices.

Is this a common problem?

On your work computer, check the sync configuration to notify you of any conflicts. You may have it set to sync both ways, but also that the Desktop 'wins' on any conflict. You want to make sure that you can choose the 'win' yourself, when there is conflict between the records on the BB and the PC.

The destop manager is set for a two way synch on contacts and to notify me of conflicts.

It's interesting that I can look at the BB and the computer and they have different info for Contact B (mobile phone number) but the synch process doesn't seem to recognize that there is a difference, so no update occurs in either direction.

On contact A, I went into the notes section on the BB, entered a hard return, and then initiated a synch. At that point, contact A updated on the work computer, but contact B remained out of synch.

For fun, why not try deleting the incorrect B contact, and see if your office PC will update it... or make a change in that contact on the office PC. Add a note.

OK, but this doesn't make things any clearer, at least not to me.

On my computer, I deleted text in notes section of Contact B. Synched. Notes update appeared on computer and BB, but they still showed different mobile phone numbers.

On my computer, I added text in notes section of Contact B. Synched. Notes update appeared on computer and BB, but now they show the same, updated mobile phone number.

This is especially confusing because on the first of these two synchs, the notes updated computer > BB but the mobile phone number did not update.

On the second synch, however, the notes updated computer > BB and the mobile phone number updated BB > computer.

I'm so confused.

I think I'm going to set up some test situations and see if I can detect further patterns.

OK, here are experiment results.

Update contact (Contact C) notes field on work computer. Synch. Pearl shows updates.

Go home. Synch. Home computer shows no update. Add new phone number to home computer contact C record. Synch again.

This time, the new phone number goes from home computer to Pearl, but notes in Pearl do not go to home computer. Synch again.

This time, the notes synch from the Pearl to the home computer.

Now, and only now, do both computers have the same info for Contact C.

Experiment part 2

Updated contact (D) phone number on Pearl. Synch with work computer. Contact D updated on work computer.

Contact C (previous post) with new phone number not updated on work computer. Added text to notes section of Contact C on work computer. Synch. Pearl updated with notes section change to Contact C, retains new Contact C phone #, but work computer not updated with Contact C new phone number.

Synch again. Work computer updated with new Contact C phone number. Pearl and work computer now both reflect same info, with all updates.

I don't mind the multiple synchs so much, but it looks like I would need to remember each contact update on either computer and tweak the contact on the computer to get a full synch / update.

I have the latest version of desktop manager, but 4.3 OS on the phone. I'm hestitant to do the phone OS update since it's not ATT sanctioned, but do you think that could be related to this problem?

It's your call to make but if you do decide to upgrade then make a backup. Keep a copy of at&t's latest OS for you model handy in case you need to revert.
