Default Choosing BB model with BT and Wi-Fi

Please Login to Remove!

I have never owned a full-featured BB but still have a 7230 just for its keyboard (my spare sim ran out so that BB is collecting dust). I currently use a Palm Treo 650 and other than making and receiving calls use it for its scheduler, contacts and email. I bought Chattermail so that I can get instant push email from my GMail account. I since found that battery standby times suffered so now set it to poll once every 20 minutes (though I can switch this back to "instant" if I am away from a computer and am waiting for some email).

Palm OS and its propensity to hang and reboot aside I am looking at upgrading to a modern BB that has Bluetooth (for in-car handsfree operation) and wi-fi (for internet and email access from hotspots). I don't have a high budget and was looking at buying second-hand and using my existing phone provider who are unique in offering a pay-as-you-go data package that is well-priced (and often better than prepaid packages). Not being familiar with BB models produced since the 7230 I would be grateful for suggestions that fit my needs. I prefer a full keyboard though the Pearl does look and feel good. I don't use my Treo for too much surfing just the occassional Google check and Google Maps when I'm lost.
And it would also be useful if I could use the BB as a modem for internet access by my notebook using BT.

8120, 8220, 8320, 8820, 8900 and 9000, I believe, are the only WiFi equipped phones. The xx20 part is the designator. If you're looking at a short budget, lean towards the 8120 or 8320 I'd think. They've been around the longest. I'm not familiar with your carrier, so you may be looking at an unlocked phone, which usually doesn't come too cheap.

Can I confirm that the 8120 and 8320 provide BT hands-free and can act as a modem for my pc?

BT, yes, modem yes, but I'm unsure if the modem goes via BT or only the cable. You might search around here a bit: BlackBerry FAQ - BlackBerryFAQ

Thanks. By the way I am in Australia so I am hoping those two models are sold and serviced here.

Dare I ask if you subscribe to a BB plan or a generic data plan? I use a generic data plan and have considered continuing with the BB but have found that Vodafone, Optus and Telstra (here) give BBs if I sign up for 24*AUD69/month. That's a toal of AUD1656 but if you subtract the cost of the BB (either Curve 8310, Pearl 8110 or Storm) at AUD550 that leaves AUD1106 or AUD46/month. They gives tons of minutes and text and unlimited BB email and BB internet usage.

The 8120 is looking more and more attractive (to me). I don't surf a lot with my phone so the smaller form factor and screen are not a problem. The battery is rated at 900mAh so I am concerned that this may need recharging every other day (or less). Has anyone had problems connecting this phone to generic data plans?
