Default HELP! Failed to send message - packet error message

Please Login to Remove!

I've had my Blackberry for over a year now. I can receive SMS messages fine, but I've never been able to send a message. I've been ignoring the problem, but now that my daughter has a cell phone, she texts me and I can't reply. Very aggravating. No matter what kind of message, whether it is 1 word or 1 paragraph, when I hit send, I get "Failed to send message - packet error". What is the problem and how do I fix it? I'm on an Enterprise server through work.

Is this a personal BB or Work BB?

Are you paying paying for TXT messages or are they being blocked by the carrier..

Do you know if the BES is blocking TXT msgs?

If this is a personal BB and you do have TXTing I would call your carrier.

I find that to be a rather hasty decision. It could be a VERY simple solution like one of the ideas mentioned by SteveO86. The hassle of going thru a return should be a last resort, in my mind....

I got my new BB last night, it did the same thing. I called my carrier and they had it fixed for me in like 15 minutes.

It doesn't sound like a Hardware issue to me.. More like a Carrier Service issue...

This is a work BB running on work BES. I assumed that since I receive TXT msgs without a problem, that the BES is not blocking it. Is that an incorrect assumption? Is it a different set of permissions to send versus receive?

Possibly. On a 4.1.6 BES, the Device-Only Items/Allow SMS policy item is defined as:

Specify whether the BlackBerry device permits sending Short Message Service (SMS) messages (text messaging).
Set this rule to False to hide text messaging functionality on the BlackBerry device.
Note: To block incoming text, or SMS, messages, set the Firewall Block Incoming Messages IT policy rule in the Security policy group.
If you do not set this rule, a default value of True will be used.
This rule applies only to Java-based BlackBerry devices version 3.6.0 and higher.

I have highlighted several key words there.

If your BES Admin has set this item to FALSE, but has NOT set the Firewall Block Incoming Messages (with SMS checked) then the result would be that you can RECEIVE and not SEND SMS messages.

HOWEVER
From the error that you are having, I think this is a carrier and not IT Policy issue. I would recommend you call your network...
