on vodafone uk at the moment, uk based phone
will it work for calls and email in japan ?

8707v will work in Japan. Please do a search as this has been asked many times.

The Bold (9000) works in Japan also (at least on AT&T).

As noted above, the 8707 is the only other BlackBerry that works in Japan. No other BlackBerry will work there.
