Default USB port as a card reader?

Can I use the USB/Charging port to access files on a standard USB 2.0 flash drive/thumb drive??? I really want to be able to use this form of data access with my 8800, but I would like to know if it is possible before I buy the cable/adapters. Anybody know if this will work?

It won't. There are no drivers for the Blackberry to recognize the external drive.

No apps to download? It can see the microSD card that I use to store files, I thought there might be something I could download that would use the external port to read files.

Nothing exists for this. Somebody would have to write it, get it signed by RIM, and test it. I don't think there's a big market for this so I wouldn't be holding my breath for it. :(

There is a software to enable the mass storage mode, but i do'nt know if it's legal, it's a personal developpment and it works fine.

I don't see how that's germane. The media card isn't accessed via the USB port.
