Default setting up email

Please Login to Remove!

Hello, new time poster here.
I've had my blackberry for a while but never managed to get email set up on it.

How do I go about getting myself an @blackberry.com email account?

In my phone when I go to email setup I only get the option to choose BES. I do not have a BES. I am confused over this.

I do not have G3 with my blackberry bold 9000. I have used it to browse online via wireless.
Will this cause a problem?

All advice really appreciated.

Do you have a BB data plan? Once you have that, I suggest a read of the FAQ. Here is one article that might help: How to add / delete email addresses - BlackBerryFAQ

I do not recommend using the carrier supplied email address however. First, if you use it a lot and it gets "harvested" then you are open for more SPAM than you care to get as it is totally unfiltered.

Second, the only way to read email to that account is on the BB itself. No web mail option, so when there is a data outage, no email.

And third, you cannot take that address with you when and if you change carriers.

Also, if you are get only the BES option, this is typically indicative of a BlackBerry Data Plan not being properly set up for the device.

You MUST have a BlackBerry Data Plan in order to get BlackBerry Data features such as push email.

I don't have a data plan.
What is a data plan?

When I read the FAQ a few options stated that you must run your PC 24/7.

I do not do this and it's not viable.
I am launching a business and I'm pretty much a sole trader at the moment with an office set up running from my home.

I have a domain that I bought and outlook 2003 set up on my PC.
My domain does provide a webmail service, am I likely to be able to forward it to my blackberry from there and which option would you recommend me to set up email.

I guess most importantly though, what is a data plan?

The first line in that link is
Quote:
* Do I need a data plan to get email?

Yes, without a data plan all you have is phone, SMS, and PIM services. (ie... Outlook, Contacts, Calendar ect..) EXCEPT if your Blackberry has WiFi, in which case you can connect to the Internet through a wireless access point (a router at home, in a coffee shop, etc.) when it is in range.
I have wifi so can I not set it up the email with wifi?

If you use Redirector (I do not recommend this option) you need your PC on and Outlook connected 24/7.

You MUST have a BB data plan for email.

ok, here's my question. i've been searching for days now on phone.

my old phone was winmo. i had email accounts setup. while at work, it would pull down every email waiting to be read. but it only kept email that was in my inbox. so when i get home. i use the pc and delete email i don't want. next time i use phone. all things that were there before are automatically deleted on phone. in other words. the phone would only retreive email that was in my inbox. if the mail was deleted on pc. the phone would delete on next retreival

8330 keeps all email on the phone. regardless of been deleted on pc or not.

bb is set for 15 days. but i don't want 15 days of all email that was ever sent to me. only the ones i actually keep. only the ones that are in my box. is that possible? i see that i can delete from my bb. and it automatically deletes from pc. but i don't want to have to delete every email on bb. it's much easier to use the pc.

i just want my bb to only maintain email i actually keep. like winmo would do.

winmo also only kept for 2 days. that was my setting. obviuosly bb won't go that low.

i have aol setup. i also went to sprint.blackberry.com and edited my email account. checked the setting to sync deleted items between mailbox and devic.

bb still maintains all email sent. we all know how much spam aol gets. so that's a lot of email to be scrolling through. any help would be appreciated. THANKS

woah! hijacked my thread.

This does sound interesting though.
Can someone provide me with information of what features I can get from a data plan before I decide to buy one.
My network is orange and I'm from the UK.

ok, thanks for all the information so far guys I think I'm up to speed.
Are data plans only available for purchase from your network provider?
Are they going to offer me 2 data plans? (a generic or the blackberry data plan)
Or is a generic data plan purchased from a third party?

How can I find out now about the technicalities of what I can do with this once I've bought it? For instance, the guy that questioned about syching up outlook with the blackberry and deleting it from one will delete it from the other.

I'm not really sure how this will work because currently outlook is set up to drag the information from a server onto my hard drive and I believe it deletes it from the server once it has been received.

Therefore I believe the blackberry must communicate with the server provided by my domain hosting company to download the emails but leave them on the server so outlook can still collect them.

Is there somewhere I can read about how all this technology works.
I have read the link from post 5 and I understand it. I want to understand the complexities of it now.
