is it possible to just use my blackberry for voice and a personal organizer for the time being....i am a poor student and dont have the money to dish out monthly....i already have a nextel plan and my dad gave me his old blackberry i just want to use it for the calender and word and spreadsheet functionality also for the bluetooth functionality
will nextel charge me for data even if im not connected to any web/email or other data services??

I agree it is a waste but yes it is possible....

How do you plan on using word processing and spreadsheet software? Without a data plan, you can't really put these types of documents on the device.

once nextel sees a blackberry on there network you are going to have a data plan added automatically may take a while but it will happen. They can tell what phone is in use. I was also told that if you dont register the phone eventually it will stop responding to signal. Thats from a nextel engineer that i met at and IBUGG conference

every one who i have read on this board who got automatically charged was trying to use blackberry data functions...if i keep gps off dont browse web or check email not even text message can i find a way or is it impossible

I'm one week into using my blackberry without a data access plan.

I deleted all the data service books, and turned off the desktop redirector.

I use it for the PIM functions, mostly.

If they charge me, its not a big deal, it'll be an excuse to get the service i've always wanted anyways.

I'll let the forum know if i get charged.

it may take a month may take three may take a few days thers no telling if or when it will happen. But I do know that you will loose signal at some point because you arent registered on the network
