Default Address book, contacts, filters, and email addressing??

Please Login to Remove!

Is there a way to set up a contact so that they don't show up in the email address autocomplete? For example, I have two people in my address book named Joan. One's my sister whom I email frequently, one's some random vendor I met years ago but that I'm keeping around in my address book. When I start composing an email and typing in J-O-A, they both pop up, but I don't want to accidently send a personal email to Joan 2, the vendor. Can I somehow "demote" Joan 2 so that her listing doesn't show up when I'm addressing an email?

I went through my address book and carefully set up different groups, moving Joan 2 to an unused group, thinking that filtering on groups would help, but it doesn't seem to do anything with respect to email addressing.

Am I overlooking something regarding the address book and email? Filtering didn't help, and I don't want to delete these contacts I consider "secondary".

Thanks!

How about you rename Joan 2 to something like ZJoan? She'll still show up, when you type J O A, but not as the first choice. And she'll only shoe as ZJoan to you, when you hear from her.

Thanks. But, uh, I was hoping there might be a more elegant solution available from BlackBerry. That suggestion works, but that's not terribly workable for all the various repeated names in the address book.

It would be nice if there was a way to mark contacts in such a way that they are part of your address book but not necessarily part of the main email addressing. After all, not every Tom, Dick, and Harry that you meet and save as a contact is someone you necessarily will ever send an email to.

Maybe there's a 3rd party app waiting to be written by someone.

I don't think you are. It probably would require the workaround above or a 3rd party app.

I see your point of view, but.... There are millions of BB users worldwide, and many of us have something small on the BB that we would like to change.
If RIM coded all of these "wouldn't it be nice" into the OS, then the OS would be huge, slow and unwieldy.

The "majority" of people probably do not have lots of email addresses that they store with little intention of using. I actually do have some of these, so I have an address book on my PC that I do NOT synch to my BB with such data in it.

There are several "workarounds" you can try, as TBH I cannot see enough demand for RIM to code the feature you describe.

Actually, Jadey, thank you, you provided a pretty good answer. I was not aware that I could create additional address books. So I created one called "old contacts", moved people that I want to keep for reference but whom I would rarely if ever email into that book, and re-synced. Problem solved.

Now the only trick is to remember that I did that and not freak out when I can't find an a contact that I was *sure* was in the address book!
