Default What to do if JL_Cmder does not work - 05-21-2009, 12:18 AM

Had attempted to connect with new DM and OS loaded with view of wiping bb using JL_Cmder however, was unable to connect as received Error message: Unable to open port. Based on what I have read here that was effectively the Kiss of Death (ie. phone Bricked).

I found the following website that provided instruction on connecting when JL_Cmder does not work. The instruction worked perfectly as I was able to open the Application loader and update the OS. Yes it connected loaded the new OS which of course I wasn't able to do previously. Now need to see if I can get the phone to work....waiting for reboot. At a minimum I have a lit screen and hour glass vs before - nothing but a slow blinking red light and NOTHING else.

As I don't have enough posts not able to provide the link. You can find it though by googling "What to do if JL_Cmder does not work" it is on the "BlackberryFAQ" site

Default What to do if JL_Cmder does not work - 05-21-2009, 07:27 AM

Well the application loader as I described worked perfectly and I was actually able to open applications and connect to the network for literally a minute....then on pushing the curser all went black and the red light returned. The process would not work again....so believe the problem is a short at the trackball and the phone is trully bricked.

if the phone is totally bricked, what can one do about that?
or by 'bricked' does that mean nothing can be done?

Great stuff! It works perfectly for my SingTel Storm that was activated on BES. The corporate IT policies are wiped off clean and device back to factory default.

I've used it to wipe my Curve and Bold to reinstall them with stable OS after testing them with beta OS. This is a very good tool, kudos to the developer.

Alright, I managed to get JL_cmder to run, but when I choose resettofactory, the next screen says

"error: unable to to open port

command completed!"

I never get the 507 screen. I tried the next faq, no luck. Anyone know what I'm talking about??

Now, when a SIM is inserted in the phone, it says "Phone not allowed MM6", connection shows "sos".

Any suggestions?

That seems to be the message when the device does not have at least 4.3 OS version. Try to upgrade it first, then you can do the rest to factory.

Nope, the device has 4.5 on it. I've followed the instructions in "what to do next...", loaded latest OS, but device still has same IT policy. Tried going through "How do I wipe..." FAQ again with new OS, nothing happens, I never get the 507 screen. Feels like I'm going in circles. If you can't use method one, How do you resettofactory using the apploader? I must be overlooking something.

Wirelessly posted (BB 11020)

Resettofactory will never give you the 507 error. It doesn't wipe the device, only the user data and IT policy. After the resettofactory it should wipe the data and reboot. After that there shouldn't be any policy. Make sure you don't have policy.bin installed from using method two otherwise that policy will be installed each time you connect to DM.

Gotcha. So, how do I ensure policy.bin is not installed? I've never intentionally backed up the device. I wiped it before I started this process, so there's no info on it that I need to back up. Before today, it's never been connected to the comp I'm using. But, it seems that no matter what I do, I can't remove the IT policy.

To be clear, I'm not connecting the device to DM at any point during this process.

When I run JL_cmder, I get the "Error: unable to open port................command completed!"

But IT policy remains.

I was surfing around Crackberry.com forums and I came across a post that suggested just using loader.exe/resettofactory from the command line to remove the IT Policy and it worked like a charm.

I am having exceptional difficulty loading this into the device. First, does the battery need to be in? The DM keeps telling me "A fatal error has occurred while updating your device's software. Please try again." What next?

Thumbs up thanks for the tips - 06-10-2009, 10:22 PM

i've got BB 8820 with os4.5 on and this works perfectly. previously tried the well documented way of replacing policy.bin but there were still remnants. what really pi$$ed me off was the password expiry plus references to IT policy still sometimes. now all that is in the past. thank you once again.

All,

As I posted above a few days ago, I have wiped my OS with JL_Cmder, and every time I try to download a new version of the OS (4.5 I think) I get an error. Should I retry to wipe the OS again? Could there be any remaining data left on the Blackberry that stands in the way of the new download? Any help from you experts would be greatly appreciated!

Is your device showing a 507 error? What error are you getting when you try to download the OS?

Yes, I'm sorry, I forgot to mention that. It is a 507 error. This number lies below an icon with a line though it.

That indicates there is no OS on the device. What happens when you try to install the new OS?

I get a fatal error message that it could not be downloaded. I have wnet to a couple of sites, including this one, to make sure I was following the procedure EXACTLY the way its described. Each time, I get the same message: "fatal error has occurred while updating your device software. Please try again"

Hmm, try rebooting your PC and then try again. Also, make sure you're not connected to a USB hub. You may want to try different USB ports on your PC as well.

I am connected to a USB hub. So I understand your recommendation correctly, you suggest connecting directly to the PC?

Yes, connect the device directly to a port on the PC.

just tried again and the Blackberry Desktop couldn't seem to recognize the device. Another interesting thing happened. The Desktop Manager asked me for the devices security code, the same thing I am trying to get rid of! How could that be if I have erased the OS from the device?

Don't use DM, use Loader.exe to load the OS. Also, just doing a wipe of the device will not remove the IT policy if there's one on the device. You will need to use ResetToFactory option in JL_Cmder.

The advantage of doing this is lost on me. Aren't the java utilities handled automatically?

have tried searching for this answer but had no luck. Am trying to use jl cmder to wipe my bold, but I have been stuck for half an hour on the red screen saying "connecting to device" and on the device the picture is of a battery with a line through it. Why is it stuck??

I have this exact same problem.

I tried to update my BB File Scout last night when my handset reset part way through and it has been stuck in a never ending reset routine ever since. Many battery pulls etc have not sorted it. It's not even making it back into the os when it resets. Just restarts part way through the boot up

I'd resorted to using JL Cmder on it but I can't even get that to work now.
