The screen should show an circle with slash with three small icons in it. It should say 507 error. Use this thread to help you get back on your feet.

Default BB Wipe Problem .. .. Pleez help .. .. !! - 03-26-2007, 02:29 PM

Very Sorry for the message duplication Mr. Clark. I chose the 'wipe' option from the main console of the JL Loader, and typed blackberry for confirmation to wipe the device but it shows a red screen for fraction of a second and dissappears, with a message "cannot open port". And sometimes it (the red screen showing message 'connecting to device') stayes, but for hours. It doesnt wipe the device for me i dont know why. Do you know wut problem is it? I make sure that the desktop manager is not running before i start the JL Loader and the USB cable is a new one too, and works fine.
And, could you please tell me, how much time does it take to wipe a black berry, having very small amount of data in it.

It usually only takes a few moments to wipe the device. It sounds like a computer issue, not a BB issue.

make sure you are connecting directly to the PC, not to a hub. Do you have a different computer you could try?

Default Tried a few times more - 03-26-2007, 03:11 PM

Mr. Clark, I tried a few times more on the BB, but still the very same red sceen appears or a few secons, and disappears when a message reading " cannot open ...." flashes and the JL Loader comes back to te options (black) screen. I tried on another PC, but the same.
Now for the tenth time i tried, and the red screen is there for almost 20 minutes .. .. i dont know wut to do.

I had borrowed the BB from someone and ruined it .. ..now ill have to return it to him, working fine again.

Whenever i get the battery into the BB, the HOUR GLASS rotates or a few seconds, and then the red LED turns ON for some time and the BB resets again, showing the HOUR GLASS for some seconds again and then restes again or gets stuck sometimes. This happens endlessly, but the homescreen doesnt apper. its been more than an hour since i have connected it to the PC, the JL CMDER is showing the red screen(connecting to the device) eversince. but as soon as i get the USB cable outa the BB, the Hour glass appears again for some seconds and gets reset again and again as before.

Does anyone know if the java loader truly removes remants of all files/email from OS. Our security dept. wants to know, and make a determination of whether the handheld wipe or java loader is what we use. Can't have ANY file remnants...

I don't think that Javaloader does anything more to protect your data versus a wipe. Here is what the BlackBerry Enterprise Security Solution Technical Overview document states about what a wipe actually does.
Quote:
BlackBerry device wipe process

A BlackBerry device wipe is designed to delete and overwrite the BlackBerry device memory using the following process:

  1. The BlackBerry device sets a Device Under Attack flag in the NV store.

If a user removes the battery before the BlackBerry device data wipe ends, when the BlackBerry device power is restored (in other words, a user replaces the battery), the BlackBerry device wipe process continues because the Device Under Attack flag is still present.

  2. If content protection of master encryption keys is turned on on the BlackBerry device, the BlackBerry device overwrites the copy of the grand master key in RAM with zeroes.
  3. The BlackBerry device deletes its binding with the BlackBerry Enterprise Server by deleting the IT policy public key from the NV store.
  4. If applicable, the BlackBerry device deletes the smart card binding information from the NV store.
  5. The BlackBerry device wireless transceiver turns off.
  6. The BlackBerry device deletes data in the persistent store in flash memory, including references to the master encryption key.
  7. The BlackBerry device overwrites flash memory with zeroes.
  8. The BlackBerry device memory scrub process overwrites the BlackBerry device heap in RAM, changing the state of each bit four times. See "Memory scrub process for RAM" below for more information.
  9. The BlackBerry device clears the BlackBerry device password from the NV store.
  10. If content protection is turned on, the BlackBerry device memory scrub process overwrites the BlackBerry device flash memory file system, changing the state of each bit four times. See "Memory scrub process for flash memory" below for more information.
  11. The BlackBerry device clears the Device Under Attack flag from the NV store.
  12. The BlackBerry device restarts.
Memory scrub process for RAM

The BlackBerry device memory scrub process performs the following actions to overwrite the BlackBerry device heap in RAM:

  1. Writes 0x33 to each byte (0011 00112).
  2. Clears all bytes to 0x00 (0000 00002).
  3. Writes 0xCC to each byte (1100 11002).
  4. Clears all bytes to 0x00 (0000 00002).
  5. Writes 0x55 to each byte (0101 01012).
  6. Clears all bytes to 0x00 (0000 00002).
  7. Writes 0xAA to each byte (1010 10102).
Memory scrub process for flash memory

If content protection is enabled, the BlackBerry device memory scrub process performs the following actions to overwrite the BlackBerry device flash memory during a BlackBerry device wipe:
  1. Writes 0x33 to each byte (0011 00112).
  2. Clears all bytes to 0xFF to each byte (1111 11112).
  3. Writes 0xCC to each byte (0x1100 11002).
  4. Clears all bytes to 0xFF (1111 11112).
  5. Writes 0x55 to each byte (0x0101 01012).
  6. Clears all bytes to 0xFF (1111 11112).
  7. Writes 0xAA to each byte (0x1010 10102).
  8. Clears all bytes to 0xFF (1111 11112).

Default Thanks for the respose!! - 03-27-2007, 11:29 PM

So with content protection enabled - there should't be any file remnants left? I'm asking because our security folks think if someone receives an email they shouldn't and we have to wipe the device, they don't want ANY remants of the email left over. I hope that makes sense..

The email will NOT be left if it's wiped via Jl_Cmder

I have exactly the same problem since I tried to install a dictionnary on my BB 7290... There's the hour glass during about 10s, then it reboots, then the hour glass during 10s, etc...
The problem is that's impossible to wipe the BB because JL_Cmder doesn't have the time to detect the BB before it reboots (the BB is ON only during about 10s then it reboots)... I can't see any solution
Theres no way to really hard reset the 7290 ?
If anwer38 or anybody else has a solution or a trick to fix this problem, it would be very nice to post here
Thanx

PS : sorry for my english

Content protection creates too many support issues in my opinion. If you require all devices to have a password you can no longer remotely reset the password with content protection turned on. It also will take 2+ hours to perform a security wipe or use JL_Cmder.

I don't believe that JavaLoader actually deletes everything. Try this test yourself. Use JL_Cmder to wipe the device (JL_Cmder uses the JavaLoader -wipe command). Now try to reload an older OS onto the device. You will be prompted with a note stating that the software you are about to install is older than what is on the device already. If JavaLoader actually deleted everything how does it know your trying to install older software?

Simply performing a security wipe (Options > Security . Wipe Handheld) from the device itself will delete all user information. This performs what your security group is wanting. If you need more details on BlackBerry security I recommend that you check out the BlackBerry website. They have a number of documents detailing the security features of the BlackBerry.

I m pretty doubtfull, but i think i had that "CONTENT PROTECTION" ENABLED .. .. i guess thats why, im not able to wipe my hadheld yet, even after connecting it for an hour, letting the JL_CMDER to work. i dont know whether it shows the same message "CONNECTNG TO THE DEVICE" on the red screen while wiping the BB or something else.

No. Wiping a device has no impact on the locked/unlocked state of the device. Once a device is unlocked it is unlocked forever.

Default IT security - 04-06-2007, 02:00 PM

New member... I'll try and keep the story short. I have a work BB and just bought a Pearl. I just want to sync my address book and calendar. But during the sync it loaded all my corporate security setting on my personal phone. I just did the wipe and now it's reloading. I'm concerned the password is still going to be required as when it went to do the reload it asked for it. How do I get rid of their IT settings?

That's the thing it's my personal BB. However after reading the sticky I may still need IT's help. I think they lock access to the regedt, and I'm on win 2000 not XP.

2000 and XP are fairly similar you may be able to do it!!! You can always see if IT will push a blank policy to YOUR BB!!

That may be the best option. But for my next trick I still have to figure out if there is a way to sync with my work Notes, at least once. Then reset the policy.

Default Please Help - 04-25-2007, 01:39 PM

I am a newbie and I m trying to get my BB Pearl to work. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I followed all the instructions to wipe out my BB Pearl. Now I m getting the 507 message. But for some reason I cant upload the new O/S to my Pearl.

I m sure everything is working. New USB cable, connecting right to the back of my computer, freshly downloaded BB 4.2 Device Manager, freshly downloaded 4.2.0.73 O/S and I still cant get it to work.

This is what I do...
1) Turn on the computer
2) Erase the Vendor.axl
3) Connect the Pearl to my computer
4) Turn on the Device Manger
5) Since everything was wiped out it shows me there is a new O/S
6) Nothing needed to backup cause my Pearl was empty
7) While everything seems to be working the first thing I see is "Connect to the device ROM" and thats when problem occurs
I get the message

"Unable to compete the loading operation"

"This system software is not designed for the connected device [A:0x00000043]"

FYI - I bought my BB Pearl from ebay. When I got it everythign was working. The seller insure me the phone was unlocked. I tested the phone and I can make phone calls, send SMS, take pictures, so in other words the Pearl was a working unit. It had 4.2.0.17 O/S and 2.2.0.11 Platform before I wiped it clean.

I hope I didnt get a LEMON from ebay.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let me know what else I can do. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Sounds like you downloaded software for a device other than the 8100. Try downloading software specifically for the 8100.

I am 100% sure that I downloaded the proper software for the BB 8100 Pearl. I downloaded directly from Blackberry. Well just to be sure, I even downloaded an older version 4.2.0.67 O/S and 2.2.0.39 Platform from Rogers Wireless since thats my service provider. After downloading I did everything from scratch. Uploading new Device Manager and using the older O/S and it still doesnt work.

I m still getting that "This system software is not designed for the connected device [A:0x00000043]".
It seems like that my BB Pearl is shutting off while it is trying to "Connct to the device ROM" Could that be possible?

This is driving me nuts. Now I cant even turn on the phone because I wiped everything. All I can see is that white screen with the 507 code.

Is there anything else I can do???
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let me know if know there is somethign else I can try.

Cheers

OK, I am going to ask you some very basic questions. Not because I don't believe you, but I want to make sure before I tell you that your up the creek without a paddle.
  1. What is the exact file name that you downloaded from the BlackBerry website?
  2. Take the battery out of the BlackBerry and check the model listed on the sticker. Should be the second line and starts with BlackBerry xxxx.

D_fisher - first I want to thank you for all your help you are providing me. The information you are providing is very helpful not just to me but I am pretty sure to everyone else as well and especailly newbies like me. hehe
Keep up the good work.

1) I downloaded 8100M_PBr4[1].2.0_rel79_PL2.2.0.39_A4.2.0.67_Rogers since I didnt know if I downloaded the correct one but I m sure that this one is correct.

2) No sticker on the back of the BB. Know I m feeling that I really purchased a LEMON.

I even tried doing it without the battery. The BB Pearl is able to connect but it still gives me that message I mentioned earlier.

I am almost ready to give up but if there is anything else I can try PLEASE let me know.

Thanks again for all your help. I appreciate everything.
Cheers

Yeah you got the right software for a Pearl. One more dumb question. Are you sure your BlackBerry looks like the device shown HERE? If the answer is yes then you are out of luck. Maybe try the 8100 software from another vendor (Cingular black/red, T-Mobile, etc).

Not sure what else to tell you to do. Maybe someone else has another suggestion.

Need a screenshot? ... Like JavaLoader?
Try using BBscreen .....Use JL_Cmder!
or BBScreenShooter!

JL_Cmder is doing is formatting the device. Reloading the OS is unrelated.

Default Hello Mr. Pieroots - 05-17-2007, 05:39 AM

Hello Mr. Pieroots
We both have the very same problem with our BB's (The endlessly rotating HOUR GLASS) , I just wanted to ask weather you have been able to rectify thet problem or not. If you have, please let me know how. It's been a long time since im not being able to solve the problem with my blackberry and I think, even the experts on this forum are not able to either understand the problem or they are no more interested in it.

Please do tell me as i m awaiting a way outta it

Regards.

Hello Mr. D_Fisher
I am very sorry but your JL_CMDER is certainly not looking to work with my BB .. .. I loaded an application into the BB that was originally a .jad application that had been converted into .alx and that caused a problem to my BB. The problem has been posted several times on this forum in detail but after a million attempts, i m still not able to solve it. You are therefore requested to help me out once again .. .. The problem is somewhat like this:

Whenever i get the battery into the BB, the HOUR GLASS rotates or a few seconds, and then the red LED turns ON for some time and the BB resets again, showing the HOUR GLASS for some seconds again and then restes again or gets stuck sometimes. This happens endlessly, but the homescreen doesnt apper. its been more than an hour since i have connected it to the PC, the JL CMDER is showing the red screen(connecting to the device) eversince. It sometimes displays a message, COULDNT CONNECT TO THE DEVICE or PORT NOT OPEN but as soon as i get the USB cable outa the BB, the Hour glass appears again for some seconds and gets reset again and again as before.

Thank you.

Regards.

Sounds like your problem is not a simple software issue. I would look at getting a warranty replacement (if applicable) or purchase a new BlackBerry.
