It may be cheap geeky plastic, but it can survive a 9 foot drop to concrete from time to time. Look at how ugly ruggedized devices can be ("military look") -- and BlackBerry is among one of the nicer-looking ruggedized units. Looks are pretty deceiving.

It sure can take a hit. I had mine drop a few times and still looks clean, no chipping or scratches.

I'll admit that the 7100 series' plastic is a little cheap feeling compared to the 7200 series but I still think they feel very durable nonetheless.

LOL, the one who dies with the most tattoos........still dies
I drop my 7520 all the time and the baterie has popped out from taking hits from the ground more than a dozen times and it looks like I go bowling with it on the pavement but it works like a charm.

He's talking about the visceral and marketing aspects, not the build quality. I happen to agree. Since I will be single again in the near future, I've been more concerned with the image aspect of myself. When I go in to a bar or club, I don't keep my BB on my hip unless I'm wearing a jacket over it. Sure it looks fine when you take it out to write an email, but the rest of the time it just screams "Geek". While I freely admit I am a Geek and use the term with pride, it's not what will woo women.

The question he poses is... how does the image and style of the BB strike an emotional chord within the psyche of the populace. The answer is... it doesn't. It is very functional, very rugged, very utilitarian. It is not warm, inviting, or friendly.

I see his point and agree... but I still wear my 7520 and 7100t at work. I just take the 7520 off and put the 7100t in a pocket when I'm "in public".

Usually Goth (City Club, Luna...) or Jazz. In NYC they may be more recognized, but here in the Detroit area... uh... not-so-much.

I dont think the BB makes you a geek anymore than tape on your glasses would. Being a geek just comes natural to geeks, its what they do. just like Jocks and rednecks etc. its just who and what we are.

I know from doing photography with the Jacksonville Jaguar football team that maybe 40% of them carry Blackbery. No one looks like a Geek to me. Blackberry is for those who want/need to keep up with mail. I would much rather have and be seen with my BB than a SideKick!!!
