Default Do I NEED a plan to make calls?

Lets say I have a blackberry that is UMA compatible, do I need a regular phone plan in order to make UMA calling or can I just connect my phone to Wi-Fi and start making call even if I don't have a regular plan.

If you have the hotspot at home service, I don't believe so. You can make calls without a plan, but you end up paying like 25 cents a minute

Yes, you need a regular phone plan. Otherwise the phone doesn't have a number. So it can't call. UMA still uses your phone plan. I don't believe you can have Hotspot (or whatever they call it now) without a voice (and data) plan.

I've been wondering, on a technical level, how the hotspot @ home service works...
How does tmob know to route an incoming communication via the internet when the phone is connected via wifi ?
Do u have to use their routers or will any router and the plan do ?

If the phone has a SIM card, then it has a number, but if the SIM isn't provisioned with a voice plan (i.e., a data only BlackBerry), then calls are charged at a per-minute rate. If the phone doesn't have a SIM card, then you are correct, it cannot call.
