They say BB does email well....but

I've heard a lot of people (especially on these boards) say that the BB does email really well, and that's its main funciton/focus...my question is, if BB does email, doesn't it seem weird that it's missing the following functionality:

-HTML support
-Ability to view the time the message was sent (not received on the BB) in the messages list
-Attachment support (sending)

I'm not starting this thread to knock the BB, as I've found it to be an invaluable tool....but these features seem to be lacking, and I was curious how many other BB users would benefit with these additions.

Side note, does the Treo650/700 handle any/all of these?

Misunderstood your post, no html email or attachments, but the 7100i shows when I sent the message.

Mine supports HTML, I can view when I sent messages... Sending attachments? Well the phone doesn't actually download the attatchment anyway so how could it send?

The BES server formats files into a format that can be displayed on the phone and they get streamed down when you request them but they don't reside on the phone.

My 7250 support html. I am to confused what model bb are you carrying. The tro 650 supports the things you have requested yes. But no where performs as well as the bb in email. And in my honest opion doesnt compare to the bb in web surfing either.

Not at all -- I have no need for those features. If the Blackberry could easily transfer and store files I could see a point to having the ability to send attachments. However, it's really cumbersome to transfer anything to the Blackberry unless it's an app that installs via Desktop Manager or OTA sync.

macdonald303 - i meant to say what time the other person sent the email to you, not what time it was received on the BB - should have made that clearer :)

stonent - i deal a lot with contracts which are typically small rtf text files (in the neighborhood of 15-100KB). i'm just saying it would be really convenient if I had an easy way to send these from the BB....i'm not trying to imply it's completely feasible with the technology, more of just a wishlist thing. Also, as the network speeds increase, it won't be out of the question to send mp3s (i'm in the music biz) or other large files. what would be great (maybe possible with the treo..don't know much about it) would be to have an expansion card slot with the relevant contracts and mp3s, and be able to attach them and email them as needed.

BadBoyBill - i've got a 7230...when you say the treo doesn't do email nearly as well, what in particular is it lacking or makes it < the BB?...trying to learn here :)

in general, i'm very happy with the BB...there are things i wish it did a little better (like the things i listed)...just trying to plot my next phone which will be due in March...looks like it will be a tough choice between the treo 700 and BB 8700...both look pretty cool.

The Treo does some things better -- such as being able to do outgoing email attachments, when you're using certain email clients. MP3 attachments are possible on the Treo, for example.

However, the BlackBerry is much better in reliability, the email just "works", is much more secure, requires less steps, uses less power, is faster, is more stable, and is more automatic. Harder to accidentally screw up email on a BlackBerry than a Treo. (To their credit, Goodlink does make it come close on Treo's). But these days, BlackBerry email has the reliability necessary to be trusted by businesses.

There's a lot more to it though. For more information, see the "Why BlackBerry" section in the BlackBerry FAQ link below.

Also, I am able to view HTML email attachments on my BlackBerry (you need a newer BlackBerryOS though). Soon, incoming audio attachments will probably be supported too (incoming at least). That's the word reported elsewhere in this forum, I believe for BES 4.1.

If you purchase eOffice from Dynoplex you have the ability to load files as well. Just my $0.02 in the early AM....

kevin.muller 11-17-2005 12:47 AM

mark - thanks for the info. can you confirm that the treo 650 has the same general screen as the bb 7100, where the screen shuts off and you can't see anything - unlike my 7230 where without the backlight, you can still see the screen

southwestcomm - i actually had dynoplex, but i found the text to be so small that i could never tell if i had a typo or not...also found it to be a bit of a dog as far as system performance. haven't tried it on my 7230, but that was my experience on my 7100 (p.s. - hated the 7100)

With the tro 600 you had to download a email retiving program to retiv emails from private email group. Such as snapper mail and so on. This program logs into imap and pop3" for instance yahoo, hotmail, g mail, and alo email servers and retrives your email. The config for these also takes time took me and to it guys to figure out my old treo 600. The bb requires no dowloads just logging on to the web page and inputting you login and password.

Simply put for the ease the setup up the speed the use im my opion i feel the bb is better. If you wanna discuss more since i have carried both feel free to pin me.
