Default Google Maps Lattitude behaviour

So when I escape the app, it just runs in background.

If I exit, but "continue to share my location", does anyone know if that puts in to any different mode (that perhaps saves more battery)?

I would close and continue sharing. What happens is this...

If you pulg it to the bg, it will continue to show your place on ur map and dl the maps, thus using data if u more.

If you just share where u are, t sends ur location to google and google takes care of everything. There will be no dl'ing of maps if u close and share, thus saving battery

Well, that would make sense, but I'm not sure it works that way. If I open Google Maps again after exiting with sharing, my new location is immediately available, as if it had been downloading the maps in background anyway.

My question about this is not the data usage. It's, does continuing to share keep the GPS on, and does the GPS then kill the phone battery (a lot more quickly than otherwise)?

I think it does. I use it without GPS (uses cell location for approx fix)

I think dankarlinski is correct. I was confused because some map data was cached already...

My Googlemaps decides to crash my phone every few days with Latitude, then after a reboot, it says the application process was killed and life moves on...go figure.
