I see many post refer to unlocking a bb...

what does someone gain by unlocking a bb?

(pardon the obvious newbie question, by I could not find any info on what it offers here..)

You can use your BB with another carrier. If you are happy with your carrier and have no need or desire to be with another one there really is little need to unlock. Some devices are unlocked with some carriers already, some carriers as long as you have been a customer in good standing will give you the unlocking code. I personally have a 7250 with Verizon and have been told it is unlocked however since it is not a GSM phone it cannot be used with Cingular/ATT, T-Mobile, Nextel, etc. So to me it would not matter if it is or if it isn't. regardless.
