Configure Email Account -
06-28-2009, 01:11 PM
Hi all, this is my first post, I have been looking around the forum but couldn't get anything.
I bought a used blackberry to try it out and found myself receiving email for (apparently) the previous owner. I want to delete that email address and create a new personal address (for both CICAL and CMIME).
For what I could find there would still be an association between the previous owner and the BB pin. Is this right? What would be the implications? He had no contacts on the bb msn whatsoever related to the bb pin so I already added my own contacts, but I want to receive my mail and messages.
Note: I'm also new to blackberry.

You need to call the previous owner and have him delete his BIS account.
Until you do this, you cannot setup a BIS account for yuorself with that PIN, and you wont be able to setup email

surely they are the same person!
whoever owned it last and setup email on the device, you need to call them and ask them to call their carrier and have their BIS account deleted.
If they have a BB and use their BIS, then they should have used the change device function, so that the email addresses work on their BB, which would have in turn released the PIN of your device.
Can you register you device for a BIS account on your carriers BIS site or do you get an error?

Yep. That is the best way to do it. Sometimes a carrier will do it for you, but you have to prove it is your device.
Just as an FYI, here is an article from our FAQ on buying used BBs: Buying a BlackBerry off eBay - BlackBerryFAQ Shows some of the problems you might run into.

Ok, so what I'mma do is that I'll send a mail to the address that is registered on the phone (because I don't know the previous device owner) and tell that person that since he didn't delete his BIS from his carrier I am receiving his mail and that he should address this by going to his carrier and deleting the BIS.
When that is done I should be able to register it with my carrier right?

Alright I contacted the person and she addressed the issued, so far I haven't received any of her mail.
The icon with her mail is still on the main menu but now is empty. Now how do I set up my own account? I do not see the Configure Email in the Main Menu.

Go to Options > Advanced Options > Service Books and delete them all, one by one. Then do a battery pull for 30 seconds or so.

Do I actually have to delete ALL of the services? I deleted both CICAL an CMIME for starters but there are some other services that I put there myself... should those go too?

Ok I did that, I erased ALL of the services (including my own) and did the battery pull for almost 1 minute. The BB created all the services again on reboot.
The mail icon of the previous owner has completely disappeared but the configure mail icon hasn't showed yet.
I also went to Options -> Advanced Options -> Host Routing Tables and registered the device in the routing table in bold letters. I got a message saying that the device had been registered with the service provider but nothing. I went to blackberry's site and my carrier is not listed. I live in DR and the carrier is CLARO.

I had been to that site but it says that my blackberry isn't registered with that data service provider, so it got me thinking that that CLARO may not be from Dominican Republic and that's why I specified the country in the last post and also clarified that I had followed the on screen steps to register the device with the data provider.
I really don't want to to go to the carrier because I don't have the time, is there anything else I can do?

I went to google once more and and put a bit more effort into the words, I finally got the site: clarodr.blackberry.com
Now I'm waiting for the 20 minutes to pass so I start receiving mail to my device.
I'll post back how it goes.

You've never answered the question as to whether you have a blackberry data plan or not.

I'm sorry, Yes I do have the plan. I registered the device in the page and now it's working properly. I'm receiving my mail to my device, except for those that I write myself (even from the gmail page and not from the phone) but I think this is more gmail related than some issue with the service.
Thank you all for the support given.

Emails that you send from online/email client on pc are not synced to the BB.
that is a limitation of BIS.

Oh! I missexpressed myself, I wasn't expecting my device to sync the sent messages sent from the computer (that much I know ;) ).
I am registered to some google groups and whenever someone writes a reply to a thread I get an mail, that works fine with my bb unless it is me who makes the reply to the thread, there, although I receive a mail on my inbox online, the bb does not sync with it for some odd reason. That's why I think the problem is actually with my mail inbox rather than with the bb data service plan nor the bb itself.
