BES Admin question
 
Hey all,

When my 8830 bit the dust last week, I called my company's corporate help desk to get enterprise activation on my insurance replacement 8830. The help desk told me that for personal devices they are only allowed to do enterprise activations for same to same devices. Meaning if I have an 8830 and I replace with an 8830 they will let me. However, if I upgrade my personal phone they won't allow a "new" activation on the network even if I'm replacing my 8830 with this new phone.

Well, I've already pre-ordered a 9630 Tour that should be coming next week. If I call my help desk and tell them that the Tour is another 8830 (when it's really my 9630) and ask for enterprise activation will it go through on my Tour? Does the BES server need to know which model of Blackberry I'm running in order to send me corporate email? I've had to replace my 8830 a couple of times due to malfunction, and every time, the help desk only asks me for my email address and then pushes the activation out to me. I'm wondering if it will cause any issues with the connection.

Trying to figure out a work around that doesn't involve having to get 20 signatures.

If they have Enterprise Service Policy set up on the BES, then no, it will not work. Enterprise Service Policy can be set up to only allow specific device models to activate. If BES is configured to disallow the Tour, then there's no way around it.

It doesn't need you or anyone to tell it what model it is. BES will determine the device model as part of the activation process and if the model isn't supported on your BES it simply won't activate.

Is the BES usually configured to disallow specific devices or is it configured to only allow specific devices? I ask because if I'm one of the first to try to activate a 9630 they might not have configured the server to disallow it.

Enterprise Service Policy is not enabled by default. It would need to be specifically configured by your BES admins.

Just so you know... even if you do manage to get the Tour activated... they WILL know about it. I'd hate to see anyone jeopardize their job by willfully circumventing corporate policies.

Thanks again. I am aware they will know it is on the network once it is activated. Believe me if I thought my job would be on the line for activating the phone I would not do it. I've been with my company for 10+ years. I am simply weighing the pros and cons of begging forgiveness vs. asking permission. The policy is not one that I would typically know about if I wasn't BSing with the help desk last week. I would simply call them and say I'm replacing my 8830 on the network and ask for an activation to be sent. If it didn't go through because of the policy I would then take it to the "asking permission" phase.

From all that I have read the 9630 is going to be the replacement phone for the 8830 through verizon anyway and they will eventually have to support it.

I'm just not sure I want to undertake the job of championing an update to company policy to accept the next phase of phones simply because I'm an early adopter of the technology.
