I did something stupid when synching my contact list.
After hours of fooling with it, it's finally ok now.

Since then, the red asterick only appears over the mailbox icon and not over the email address box that received the email.

(does that make sense?)

How do I fix it?

The MESSAGES icon? Yes, thats where all emails are collected.
you are not seeing the notificaition on the youremail@domain icon?
do a battery pull, and then resend your service books if the battery pull doesnt fix it.
