Question After switching provider - will it change device software?

Please Login to Remove!

I have recently bought a Blackberry Curve 8310 which was an O2 (UK) upgrade handset. However, I want to use the phone on Orange (UK).

The device is unlocked (checked the FAQs for that) and SMS calls etc are fine. I will be adding the Orange blackberry bundle to get a 'proper' data allowance and BIS account but my question is:

Once I have activated this, will my device update to Orange specific software (the maps and browser etc) when I upgrade the OS through the desktop app?

I want to get the maps and browser etc working which aren't at present. Should this sort it?

Apologies in advance for the basic questions, this is my first blackberry!

No it will not automatically update to a different carriers software.

To get the maps and browser working, you need to get that data plan on your account, the OS has nothing to do with that.
they will NOT work until you have the Blackberry data plan.

About the OS:

What you do, is download the latest OS for your phone.
It does NOT have to be from the same carrier you are using.
Instructions on what to do are in the stickied thread which states "LATEST OS:" in the forum for your device.

I would not recommend an OS update just because you are changing carriers, especially sinceyou are a new user. The OS comes from RIM so it is essentially the same. Get to knwo the device first. Find out what it can and cannot do. If it works for you, then why try to fix it with an OS upgrade?

Add the BB data plan and the browser should work, and will give you the BB Browser and email as mentioned above. Read our GPS & Mapping Forum to help you get the GPS up and going.

Thanks for that, signed up to the blackberry plan and email is working immediately. I'll go take a look in the mapping section now, thanks.

Your carrier settings are in the service books -- not the OS itself. You can change carrier OS's but there's really no reason to do so. Neither of my at&t BB's run an at&t OS.

If it's not too late already, I'd avoid using Orange for your BB! I've nothing but bad news regarding them. O2 came recommended though, and Vodafone seems solid enough.
