Default Benefits of OS upgrade

Please Login to Remove!

I have an 8830 WE (Sprint) with their most updated OS (4.5.0.135). I think the package version is 4.5.0.201. I know there are higher versions out there like 4.6 or 5.0 from different carriers than can be downloaded.

Is there ANY benefit of upgrading to a higher OS? (Memory, interface, etc...) Also, are there any incompatibility issues?

Thanks

You cannot download 4.6 or 5.0 (its a beta) for a device that doesnt support it.
4.6 will not load onto your device.
5.0 once officially released MAY be available for your device, but as yet we don't know which older model versions will get it.

Provided the newer OS is available for your model, the benefits are:

Improved performance.
Improved stability.
New features.
Compatibility with new software and/or services.

Ok i just got done talking to a blackberry specialist on the phone, i to saw new OS update for the 8330m phones im running v4.5.0.131 there is NO difference unless you want multilang, on your cell which i dont need. aslong as you have v4.5 you are good to go, when it changes to something like 4.6, 4.7 thats when you should upgrade dont worry about the last 3 numbers, unless your cell is acting slow or something else then do upgrade if you want to.

I have a Tour (Verizon side).

If I try to put 5.0 OS on here...will it no longer work on Verizon?

You can load ANY carrier OS, as long as its made for your device.
I.e. you can put t-mob's 8900 os on a at&t 8900
but you cant put a 8900 os on a 9000

it will still work.

This is of course if there is a 5.0 OS beta out there for the tour.

Assuming there is one, it will work within the constraints of a beta -- meaning that you should be prepared for "issues" and not whine when they hit you up-side the head.

Keep in mind that their are downsides to updating your OS as well. Such as you will most likely need to tinker with your set up and redo your icons, home page etc to your liking. You will probably need to reload all of your 3rd party apps and some of those might not work.

My real point is this: if the device works for you and you have no issues, then it isn't broken and there is no need to try to fix it. I am probably in the minority on this, but upgrading the OS, especially to a beta version, for the heck of it just isn't a good idea IMHO.

Actually Dubdub, I tend to agree with you on that one. it should be a very considered decision.

Depends on the specific OS update that you're talking about. It's impossible to make a meaningful generalization about all OS updates (past, present and future). If you want to keep track of the latest OS updates for your model then keep an eye on the "Latest OS" thread for your device. You'll find it in the subforum for your model. The discussion thread will contain the type of info you're looking for.

If there's a bug fix or new feature that you're looking for in the OS update then there is a benefit. If not then not so much.

This is, in the most GENERAL terms, what upgrades in the OS tend to bring. Naturally they don't all come at once, and not with every single upgrade. It's a case-by-case basis, and those advocating caution are 100% right. Don't upgrade just to have the latest. Sometimes a new OS actually causes new issues. The bottom line is that if you're device is working properly, leave it alone! Unless there is a new "killer feature" or you're having issues with your current OS, stick with what you've got.
