Default Charges/GPS charges??!!

Please Login to Remove!

Hi,

I've recently started using my Blackberry 8900 Curve, which I love.

I'm on 'Dolphin 35', which is a tariff from Orange (UK). Basically, before my BB I paid 35 pm. I now pay 40 (and extra 5) - this, according to Orange, gives me unlimited internet acces via my BB.

Firstly, is this correct? I think it is, but would liike confirmation if possible. Also, I have both Google Maps and Blackberry Maps, both of which can be used as a GPS. I know that Google is free for this, but is the BB maps also free? I did call Orange to ask, but the girl I spoke to was , to say the least, a little unconvincing... she just said that as long as I'm on the 5 unlimited plan, then GPS is also free, regardless of which application I use.

Cheers for any advice.

Yes the extra 5 is effectively the Blackberry data plan so you can get email and the relevant things to your phone for it to work to its full potential.

GPS is merely something in the phone. To use GPS, yes you need google or BB maps
Both use DATA to download the maps to your phone.
This will be taken out of that 5 p/m as that is effectively data.

Cheers MR, very helpful indeed.

Just to clarify tho', when you say "This will be taken out of that 5 p/m as that is effectively data", should I assume you mean inclusive (ie, using the GPS to find my way around is free as I've paid my fiver)?

A.

The 5 per month will give you (more than likely a fair use policy of) an amount of data.
Using GPS costs nothing (either money or data) but to download MAPS as you move is what "costs you"
Yes, it is inclusive in your plan.

For GPS on any BB:

- You need a GPS receiver. The receiver is free to use but it only gives you latitude/longitude. If you want anything else (maps, POI's, directions, voice prompts, etc) you need a GPS app.
- Some GPS apps are free to use, some are not. Both Google Maps and BB Maps are free.
- However most BB GPS apps require data. If you have an unlimited data plan then you're good to go. If not, usage of your GPS app may incur additional data charges if you exceed what is allowed in your data plan.

The latter 2 are potential areas where charges may be incurred. The GPS receiver, of course, is free to use but it's only one piece of the puzzle.

Out of interest, what's the approx data usage for, say, using BB maps for a hlaf-hour journey?

very small.
BB compress data unlike no other i.e. iphone uses approx twice if not 4 times as much data than a BB.
