Default Blackberry tour?

Please Login to Remove!

Hi people, my name is Jon and I'm currently in Portugal....
I have a question that has been on my mind from the several past days, specially because of the arrival of the iPhone 3Gs....
The thing is that I currently own an iPhone 3G.... I was thinking in upgrading for the 3Gs but this idiots here in portugal are asking for 450 euros for the phone and I'm seriously not in the mood to give so much money when apple specifically said it was going for the 199 dollars....
So, and since I have always been a fan of blackberry (go figure :P eheh), why not take the chance and buy one now?
But here's the thing.... The blackberry that suits me the most is the tour, 'cause of the 3G and the 3.2 Mpixel camera.... BUT THESE IDIOTS IN PORTUGAL DON'T HAVE THAT PHONE!!!! CAN YOU BELIVE IT?! SERIOUSLY!
Since I've been using my iPhone 3G (really good :D) I'm used to search and surf the web really fast, and I don't wanna downgrade.... So 3G is a major feature I'm looking for in a BB.... So there comes the Bold.... which their selling here.... but it only has a 2 mpixel camera :( which is pretty much like my iPhone 3G.... There's also the curve 8900 with the 3.2 mpixel camera but it doesn't have 3 G :(

Can anybody give me some advice please? :P
And does anybody know if the BB tour is coming to portugal anytime soon?

Another idea that I had was to buy one without a contract on amazon.com.... But they come locked to verizon....so I searched a bit on the web and I found out that the BB can be unlocked for vodafone portugal on a web site..... Does anybody know how this really works? And is it effective, I mean, will I be able to use the 3G network on the BB tour if I purchase it from Amazon?

Sorry the long texting, but I've been having all this doubts and nobody seems to know enough to explain me....

Thanks

Welcome to the forums.

Yes you should be able to get 3G with the tour if you purchase it from Amazon as you stated. Yes, unlocking the phone will do what you would like and allow you to use it on Vodafone Portugal.

I would recommend going to HorizonWirelessOnline.com - Horizon Wireless, The World’s Cellular Repair Center to unlock your phone. They're a very reputable company.

Thank you very much!
And unlocking the BB is it going to be different from the unlocked one?
I ask this because I have my iPhone 3G for a year and a half and last week I decided to unlock it, but I didn't like the final result since it became really slower :(

Stupid question to ask in a BB forum, but do you advise me to purchase the BB Tour? :P

Again thanks a lot

All unlocking a BlackBerry does is allow you to use it on a different carrier's network. It's not like jailbreaking an iPhone.

Keep in mind that BlackBerry devices are not for everyone. You will get biased answers if you're asking on a BB Forum. However, I think the Tour is a solid device. If it has the features that you're looking for in a device, then I would recommend purchasing one.

Thanks, I appreciate it
The features I'm looking for in a BB are the the keybord (I love it), the mail (I seriously need this for college), to surf the web at a good speed (I don't like to wait for the device to work, it needs to be fast =P), word and power point reader, editor and creator, messenger, twitter and facebook (eheh xD)

The Tour can do all that you ask (with Docs to Go). However the browser on the device is not the quickest. You may want to look into Opera Mini or Bolt.

The BlackBerry Tour is only 3G on CDMA networks.
If you're planning to use it on a GSM network (which it sounds like you are) you will only get EDGE, not 3G.

This is correct. If you're going to GSM, it will get EDGE.

Correct me if I am wrong, but this is only true for American GSM providers.

BlackBerry Tour (Dual-Band CDMA2000 + Dual Band GSM/GPRS): USA, Canada, Mexico + International roaming as specified by
Quad-Band: 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900MHz GSM/GPRS/EDGE networks
Single-Band: 2100 MHz UMTS/HSPA networks
Dual-Band: 800/1900 MHz CDMA/EVDO Rev A networksGSM/GPRS provider (Vodaphone).

Vodafone Portugal uses 2100 MHz as their 3G band. The Tour should pick this up, correct?

Ah, yes. I do believe you are correct.
My bad.
