Welcome to the forums.

Let the battery charge for a few hours and then remove the battery for 30 seconds, then reinsert the battery.

Default Tried the battery charge/replace trick

I tried leaving it charging for several hrs. Then doing swap out for 30 sec. Still getting long red light on top of BB then screen lights up with battery and red slash thru it.

If you're concerned about the health of your device, go to a verizon/alltel dealer and ask them to let you try a battery. They will provide you with one. See what occurs when you do that.
