Default Purpose of unlocking a phone?

Please Login to Remove!

I see a lot of posts regarding unlocking the BB's. What are the benefits of having an unlocked phone? I have had a BB since the 7100T was introduced on Tmobile and now have an 8100 and never had to unlock them.

Just curious.

Bill

Unlocking a phone allows you to use it on a different network.

So let's say you like the new phone/BB coming out from AT&T, but you're on T-Mobile. You can purchase the phone from AT&T (probably full price), unlock it, and use your T-Mo SIM card in it and use on the T-Mobile network.

In addition to the aforementioned...the main advantage is come resale time. An unlocked phone will work on many GSM networks, thus increasing the possibility of a sale, and therefore it is not restricted for use on just one GSM network.
