Default Questions about "BlackBerry Services"..

Please Login to Remove!

Hey, I am currently with Fido (Canadian cellular carrier) and I'm interested in the curve 8900. I plan to get a contract with the BlackBerry PEARL just for hold (december with Fido again, after it expires) with unlimited instant messaging &/or email.

1) If I were to buy the curve 8900 unlocked NOW, and use my fido sim card; Could I access/assign my email and accounts to the email/instant messaging applications (via wi-fi)? I heard we MUST have a BlackBerry plan in order to do so, or have "BlackBerry Services", can somebody clarify this for me?

2) If I were to buy the curve 8900 unlocked AFTER i get my unlimited email/IM with my new contract and blackberry Pearl, Will I then be able to access/assign my accounts to the email/IM apps? Will using the curve 8900 be exactly the same as if i were to use the Blackberry Pearl that i bought with my contract?

Thanks so much and any help is greatly appreciated

1) you need the Blackberry services to have access to the things that allow you to do email.
Without it, you cannot do it.

2)Yes. You would need to use the "change device" option on the BIS (the blackberry services) so that service books and email accounts are pushed to the new device.

(1) a BB data plan is your connection to the "Blackberry services". So you must have a BB data plan for email and BBM. WiFi along doesn't get you a connection to RIM for those.

(2) You will also have to log into your BIS account and change the PIN and IMEI to the new device so email and PIN messages will go tot he new one.

Thanks a lot guys. Just a few more questions;

3) Does the BlackBerry have a notes application, one that comes already installed? Or It would be great if Documents-to-go was already installed (does 8900 come with OS 4.5?)

4) About the "What_do_I_need_a_Data_Plan_for" FAQ;
If I had NO data plan, would I still be able to access wi-fi and net surf and do other things (besides email/IM because no BB services yet)?

5) Since 8900 runs on edge, is it best to keep BB on edge/data at all times? (since that allows me to get push email/IM messages) How much battery would it take up in this case?

The 8900 comes with Os 4.6.1
Docs to go Standard (able to edit but not CREATE docs) comes pre-installed, as does the Memo Pad (notes) application.

Yes/No Access wi-fi, changing the browser to Hotspot then you can surf the net. Thats it.

Yes. The same as any other BB. Its standard that the phone will be in EDGE (with data) and edge (without data). It doesnt take up any more of the battery than just using the phone.

Thanks so much Raven.

What format/file type does memopad/notes app save as? Can we save as .txt files?

Is it possible for me to use the Facebook App, youtube app, etc or even access the blackberry app world with just wi-fi (if I don't have blackberry plan/data what soever)?

See the thing is, I feel like I currently need a blackberry for txting (which my plan has), and to-do notes, calendar, and some internet access; which will all make it very convenient and easy for me during university.
But the problem is my contract ends at december, which is far longer then I want to wait in order to get a full black berry plan (so i can do unlimited emails + IM + pin msging, which is all thats exclusive i believe)
Do you recommend me wait till december to get a blackberry along with the plan? or should i buy an unlocked 8900 now (which is about $450 -___-)?

Better yet, what are the differences if I were to get a blackberry plan? Is it just the email/IM access + pin msging? what would I not be able to do if I don't have a BB plan?

no idea, i dont use it.

no. you need the BB data plan to use facebook, app world and most other apps.

What you can do without data plan:
call
text
use opera mini to browse

Thats it.

You NEED a data plan to email, you NEED a data plan to IM, you NEED a data plan to pin message, you NEED a data plan to access the internet via the native browser, you NEED a data plan to download apps, you NEED a data plan to use apps.

If you can afford to buy a BB now, then do so and just activate the BB data plan by calling up your carrier.
If you cant afford it, wait until december when you'll likely get a much cheaper option for the BB.

Thanks for the heads up, I've read the faqs.

Just 1 last clarification needed,
So a BB data plan is necessary to download apps, and use apps. Lets say I get the unlimited email+IM BB plan. No data, as in no 500 mb, etc, nothing. Just the unlimited email + IM.
Does this mean I can now use wi-fi to access appworld and download apps, AND use the apps? I wouldn't want to use facebook, other apps, etc through data when I don't have it in the plan. I am only planning on getting the unlimited email and IM, which doesn't cover any mb of data for other things.

No.
You NEED data to download and use apps.
App world is a RIM application. It will not work with wi-fi if you dont have a data plan.
So is Facebook.

Most apps will NOT work without a DATA plan.

Anybody want to place a bet on a new post where a different method of circumventing the system is proposed?

I'm still not quite understanding.

The unlimited email + IM BB data plan is a data plan none-the-less. Does that mean apps ONLY use data??? Which is completely unlike all the other phones in the market: most of them can run apps via wi-fi.
Or do you mean I NEED a data plan (in which i am getting that BB data plan, but no MB of data) in order to ACCESS apps and USE them?

"It will not work with wi-fi if you dont have a data plan."
So will they work with wi-fi, if i got my BB data plan: unlimited email + IM, no MB

I have no experience of Fido's plans.
After reading there BB email + IM terms, it would appear that:
Yes you would get email, yes you would be able to use IM programs that it states.

but NO you would not be able to download OR use any other apps.
Nor surf the internet.
unless you add their DATA part to your plan. The 500MB etc bit.

Also, some apps can run on wi-fi. i.e. FB will run if wi-fi is the only active connection.
HOWEVER without the correct DATA plan, you do not have SERVICE BOOKS which control such things as internet and data access on a BB.
No service books, no access to apps.

If you really don't understand, I suggest you call them, and ask "Will I be able to download apps with the BB email + IM plan" "Do I have to have your DATA 500MB etc plan to download apps on a BB".

A blackberry is like NO other mobile or smartphone.
What you think should work because it works on other phones, just isnt the way a blackberry works.

Haven't found a way to edit posts in here.

I do sincerely hope it is possible for me to use apps/go to appworld via wi-fi. otherwise, the only point of wi-fi on the blackberry would be the opera mobile??

Either way, i will contact fido and probably make my decision soon. Thanks for all your help.

Ok, again.

No.
Wi-fi is a quicker connection and FREE
You can therefore use it for internet and for apps that allow wi-fi so that it is not coming out of your data MB's.

HOWEVER you cant JUST use wi-fi to download or use apps, and certainly not with app world.
App world is a RIM application. RIM REQUIRE you to have a DATA plan.
Once you HAVE a data plan, you can download and use App world (and other apps by RIM, and other apps) by DATA (i.e. EGDE/3G) OR wi-fi.

But you CANNOT use app world with ONLY wi-fi, because to download it, you NEED a DATA plan.

Please, just call them.
