Probably the stupidest question to post on this forum... I feel like an idiot for asking this, but I work for AT&T and they don't like to give us a straight answer on this issue, because they think they'd miss out on profit, and I also don't actually have a blackberry to test this out on, but is it possible to connect to a wi-fi network without having a data plan? I know it's the simplest thing in the world but I've never had the opportunity to find out. I also don't know if this is where I should post... >.> |
yes you can connect what you can do with wi-fi without a data plan is however limited. |
Things like not being able to do BB messenger would be obvious to me I think. Again, not sure if this is the place I should post this, but what is it limited to? Can you connect to your browser and surf the net? Can you use email? Sorry if I'm asking a lot, I've just not had the opportunity to experiment by myself. |
you have download Opera mini to PC, transfer to phone, to surf the net on wi-fi. No, you cannot use email. theres a thread around somewhere about what you can do with only wi-fi and no data |
Wirelessly posted (Its All About the U!) You can SMS and have voice. You cannot download OTA. Though I am not sure if that relates to a hotspot browser. You also have a paperweight. |
I get a few customers that want to run off of just wi-fi, which is why I'm asking. I'm not sure what they would want to do with it, as far as I know we don't have a Blackberry Enabler feature. It always blows my mind too when someone buys a blackberry and has a data block, sms block, with full intent to only use it as a voice phone. Thanks for your responses guys. |

Ah, so you can access things like MSN, Yahoo, AOL, and Gmail? That makes a bit more sense. |
Only by loggin into the webmail for that provider. to xs11e, true, except tesco.net (my isp). the webmail isnt a recognised on mobiles and cannot be logged into. |
So you have the ability to access the webmail, depending on the provider. I see. So it is very limited in it's functionality, but there is some there. Thanks for all the answers guys, you've helped me answer a question that's been bugging me for a while now. |
The answers to many of your questions can be found in the FAQ What do I need a Data Plan for? This FAQ talks about what you can do with no data plan, a generic data plan, and what you need a BB plan for. I believe using WiFi will work the same as a generic data plan. |
Thanks for the link TXLady, unfortunately I can't view it at work, and we don't have any info here, they really don't want us to even tell customers that it's possible it seems like, I'll take a look at it when I get home most likely. :) |
