Angry Still Trying to Get Internet Access

Please Login to Remove!

Sorry, but it is me again. Just to recap, I bought my Storm 9500 (UK) and have a Pay as You Go SIM card - provider ASDA (who use Vodaphone). It is badged Vodafone but is allegedly unlocked and certainly my SIM would indicate this I have been reading all about Data Plans but my provider allows me to access the internet at 20p per MB. They tell me that BB will not disclose the location for settings to them. The settings are:
Homepage:
APN Name: ASDA mobile
APN Address: asdamobiles.co.uk
Gateway IP address: 212.183.137.12
Username: wap
Password: wap
Session Type: GPRS
Authentication: Normal
Security: Off
Port Number: 8799 WAP2.0, 9201 WAP1.x

I have established that these settings have to be enterred into Options>AdvancedAptions>Service Book and various folders therein (I think!!). I cannot even receive pictures on messages as I don't have a Data Plan. I do have a plan in as much as ASDA will give me access to the internet. I cannot, however, change any of the Service Book settings as they appear locked.
Can anyone please tell me what I can do to change the settings?
I am an absolute novice with BB but I cannot accept that such restrictive practices can exist where I cannot use a phone/pda how I want to.
If I wanted to pay a service provider I would not have bought the phone myself but would have had a freebie on a contract. Can someone please, please help?

Options>AdvancedAptions>Service Book
Wrong. They need to be entered into Options - Advanced - TCP/IP
You should see:
Check box: APN Settings Enabled. Check it.
APN: asdamobiles.co.uk
Check Box: APN Authentication Enabled. Check it.
Username: wap
Password: wap

You then need to go options - advanced - browser
and change the default browser (top option) to whichever says WAP, ASDA or equivilent.
NOT internet/blackberry/or Hotspot.

All of the above MAY work. If not, you're screwed.

You should have investigated Blackberry before buying one.
To use a blackberry to its full advantage, you need a Blackberry data plan.
As ASDA do not offer this (neither do Tesco) you will not get what you want.

Most of the BlackBerry's data services will not work without a BlackBerry data plan. No email, BB Messenger, no built-in browser, and even with Opera Mini as a browser you cannot download anything.

You bought a very purpose-driven and specifically designed device. It was built to work with BlackBerry data plans, and using one without a BB plan limits what you can to greatly.

Why do people continue to think they can beat the requirement for a data plan?

Because it is the best device, but they don't want to pay the price for the quality service.

My thanks to Midnightdraven again. I have done as you suggested but the second part for the browser configuration cannot be done as I have the name Vodafone Live in blue with no other option to change anything in that space. As for the other 'helpful' comments, I'm not going to get into any long drawn out discussions as my knowledge is clearly inferior. All I did was to buy a product in good faith having read some pretty good reviews. At the end of the day, it is a jolly computer trying to access the internet and the only bar to that are companies making a pretty good living out of building a 'golden calf'. I will return to the simpleton option i.e. a Windows based phone/pda where I can transfer a French/English dictionary and a bible and anything else I would like to read at my leisure, sad individual that I am. For all those who have helped, keep up the good work. Kindest Regards bob Brown

Id try changing it to Vodafone live then.
That would be the wap browser, regardless of name, it should connect with the APN settings you've put in.

Thanks again Midnightdraven. It sort of works in as much as when I select the browser it now goes to 'Requesting' and the Vodafone page now has ASDA mobile at the foot of the page, but it still keeps telling me that I am 'unable to connect to the internet - try again later - If the problem persists please contact your service provider' I will have to speak to Vodafone but they are not going to be very helpful.

If anyone else has any ideas, please let me know.
