Default Desktop Can't Connect to Internet

I have a Windows XP pro computer with Outlook 2003 I would like to synch my contacts and calendar with my BB Storm. I installed the desktop software and chose the personal email account not the Enterprise manager and
connected it to a USB port directly not through a hub. The desktop software detects the hardware and I was able to use it to update the firmware on the blackberry. When I click on the button to synchronize I receive a error about not being able to connect to the internet. I have found several other post here with the same error and tried several things. I am connected to the internet using a cable modem and a Lynksys router. In the router configuration I have allowed traffic on port 4101 which is the same port listed in the Blackberry router configuration which is my default gateway.
