If I'm planning an international trip and don't want to get charged for Emails/SMS while I'm gone can I simply use the Firewall to block these items or will I still incure charges since they came to my Blackberry?

You will still incur charges. Since the Firewall message blocking is on the BlackBerry itself, you've already used the wireless carrier by the time the message reaches your handheld to be filtered.
