Default Problem Synchronizing Blackberry Pearl with Outlook

I have started a new job and the boss has asked me to synchronize his Blackberry Pearl 8100. I have followed guidelines in manual and on line but the problem is;
I click on Blackberry Desktop Manager;
Then click Synchronize;
I cannot click Synchronize now button;
so I went to Configurations and tried to click on configure synch but it will not allow me to click on this either.
The Blackberry is connected and everything else seems to be in order; can anyone help me?

Does Desktop Manager show that the Blackberry is connected?

When I attach Blackberry with USB it shows on PC desktop that it is connected but then on the top index of Desktop Manager it reads Disconnected Blackberry Desktop Manager - does this mean it is disconnected? If so how can I get The Desktop Manager to recognize the Blackberry?
