The checkmark means the message was sent, the "D" means it was delivered to the recipient and an "R" means they read it. Like misaac said, most likely the person doesn't have their phone on or they were using it for a phone call at the time. I have had situations where random messages didn't ever show a D or R, yet I know they were received.
