Default Can somone hack a Pearl through an SMS text?

I hope someone can answer a quick question:

Can someone hack into your phone (to monitor texts, phone list or numbers called, etc) by sending you a text message? I thought I read once that it was possible to load spyware onto someone's phone that way. I read an online article once (of course, can't find it now!) that cautioned against opening text messages from unknown numbers for that reason.

I always password-potect my cellphone so no one can load any spyware onto it. Are there any other measures I could/should be taking to further protect my cell or is P/W protection sufficient? I do this because I have a stepson living with us and his mother is notorious for spying on people, and he seems to be following in her footsteps <cringe>.

I received a text from a number I don't recognize, and whether or not it's a coincidence (I'm a female) the message was obviously meant for a girl.

I've tried searching this on the web, but can't find any answers... I'd appreciate any insight anyone would have on this.

Thanks!

Extremely unlikely if not impossible. Keep a strong password and have it activated quickly when you haven't used the BB and you should be fine.

Good to know - thanks to both of you for the replies.
