From where did you obtain the device?

If the PIN and/or IMEI is listed on the lost or stolen database, you won't ever be able to use the BlackBerry RIM data functions (email, browser, RIM apps such as Facebook, etc.).

I think the provider probably should have kept the phone... They would have contacted the person who the phone belongs to. Did you get the phone on Ebay or at a pawn shop or something? There's no way for you as a customer to track the ESN (serial number)... that I know of anyways. Where did you get the phone? Did you purchase a used one from a store? Whoever had that phone before you might have the ESN on their account.

Your carrier already confirmed that for you.

You want it in writing? Call them.

Diwaney,

Your lack of detail in answering is the source of confusion here.

You bought it at an authorized carrier retail store, or from something like Big Mo's Deescount Eelectronics?

One of my favorite places.

Are you serious? You have been told by your carrier the phone is stolen, and you still want to "make sure" it is stolen? Come on... Let me see if I got this right:
  • You "got" this phone from "a store."
  • You called to get this phone activated by your carrier.
  • They told you the phone is stolen.
  • Instead of taking the phone back to "the store" and demanding a replacement as a legitimate buyer, you want to keep it and "verify" that it is stolen.

Does that sound about right? In law enforcement, this behavior would be called "a clue."

It's not unheard of for some less-than-reputable shops to sell used devices as new. Or to try and make some extra $$ by selling ill-gotten goods. Take is straight back and demand a refund or exchange. They sold you a stolen device. No other way to say it really.

I think the lack of response says a lot.

If you had bought it from your carrier, they should have activated it for you in store anyways.

I would go to a licensed store for the carrier of your choice in the future, that way you'll avoid this happening again.
