Default Blackberry Messenger working internationally?

Please Login to Remove!

I've got an 8100/Pearl, but I haven't bought a phone plan yet (new to Australia, haven't got much of anything), so I can't do anything with it. I was just wondering...

If I get a phone plan here, will I be able to use Blackberry Messenger to IM someone with a Blackberry Curve in the USA?

The plan I'm looking at comes with 10 MB a month. I'd be using the messenger for 3 or 4 hours a day, most likely, but without text I should still come in around 10 MB, right?

Will my friend have to have BBM open to receive my messages, or just be signed in in the background? I'd assume you sign in then it rests in the background and vibrates when you get a new message, but then wouldn't everyone use it instead of texting?

Once you've entered a name into BBM its always signed in.
Yes, alot of people do use it instead of texting, but you still need to text friends who don't have blackberries!

The five basic apps that are always running are Messages, Home Screen, Phone, Browser, and BB Messenger. They never close/shut down completely, but rather idle in the background.

Depending on your use of BBM, coupled with other features, you might run into issues with a 10 megabyte plan. Do you have some good experience that suggests that 10 mb will be sufficient for you?
