Question Gprs / 'edge' ?

Please Login to Remove!

I don't think this is specific to my model so I hope this is the correct place to ask;

Why does the connection name in the top right hand corner mainly read GPRS, but at other times read EDGE? What determines the connection type?

(Found what EDGE is: Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

Thanks

GPRS is more common in the UK.
I was only aware of O2 and Orange operating the EDGE network, but not particularly widespread.
EDGE is slightly faster I believe.
It will change depending on the cell tower you're connected to it, and if it can make a connection to EDGE at that tower.

Thanks.
EDGE started coming up since I asked Voda support this morning to find out why my MMS wasn't working. They apparently 'enabled' MMS although why it wasn't already enabled I have no idea.

For what it's worth, EDGE may not be all that fast, but it is significantly faster than GPRS in practical terms. For example, when using Pandora. Don't bother if you just have GPRS. Streaming audio works fine on EDGE, but buffers every half minute on GPRS. EDGE speed vs GPRS is also noticeable when web browsing.

Thanks
Is EDGE used when sending texts or just MMS? I've noticed my texts have slowed or maybe I'm just imagining it?!

Text (SMS) and MMS use the voice network, not data.
