I have 3 8900's
2 are currently on data plans the third phone is new and not activated, if I put my sim card in from another phone ( sony erricson) the phone works ( can make and recieve calls) I have the unactivated phone connected to my wifi but when I try to browse the internet no data service...

To use the unactivated phone at home on my wifi do I still need a data plan tied to the sim card or am I just missing a setting for data connection?

I was under the impression that you didn't need to have a data plan just to use wifi. My info might be outdated though.

Did you check all your settings like selecting the correct browser (Options>Advanced>Browser)?

Does the wifi logo turn white or stay grayed out when you try to access a hotspot browser?

If its staying gray then you have the answer which i know you dont want

Trimix has solved my issue apprantly my carrier has the broswer set to rogers mall not hotspot all is working fine now, thanks for the help greatly appreciated
