Default Unlockable Pearl 8100

I received from a friend a BB 8100 that he wasn't using any more. It was locked to a carrier which I wasn't a member of. I called the carrier to have it unlocked and they told me that according to their records it is unlocked. However in the SIM Card section under options, the Network = Active.

I then went to a company who charges to unlock BBs and paid them about 25 dollars to unlock it for me. The told me that the unlocking code for my IMEI couldn't be found or that it was accessible (or something). Now I am suck with a BB that I can only use with the original carrier (I want to use my own carrier).

Anyway have any sollutions?

Thanks

So if the carrier tells you it is unlocked what happened when you tried to have it set up on the new carrier? You do realize a BB will not work except as a phone without a Data plan. Putting in any SIM will show active if the SIM is active on a carriers network.

What I did was got a sim with the carrier of the BB, called them to unlock it for me and they told me it was unlocked. Then I tried to use my sim from my current carrier and in the Handset it says Invalid Sim Card. I have tried a number of friends SIMs and it seems to be a problem with the handset and not the sims. I tried to get it unlocked online from a company and they told me they couldn't unlock it as they were unable to find an unlocking code for my IMEI. I got the phone as a gift but I don't want to spend a huge amount of money to unlock it and I don't want to be forced to migrate to the same carrier as the BB (my current carrier is pretty good).

I tried contacting BB but their don't seem to care, they just pointed me back to the carrier.
