First of all, is the device a vodaphone branded BB? If not what carrier?

Do you know if it was previously on BES?

Have the service books been sent and have you received an activation email?

If the handset is blocked, then the device was likely stolen by either you or your friend, and you should take it to a Vodafone shop to ensure that it is returned to the rightful owner.
