A contact on my Blackberry Messenger list.. it shows what song he's listening to. It comes up under recent updates. Shows a music note & the name of the song. I tried to figure it out, but can't. I know there is an option that allows contacts to see music updates. I have it checked, but I don't think it's working. How does this work? Do I need a certain program or something?

You need 5.0 OS or higher to have that option.....

In order for you to display music that you are listening to your contacts, you need to have a device that is running Operating Software version 5.0 or greater.

Yes....the version you have is up-to-date. But not the version that allows you to do what you want to do.

Actually, you could do this with the Bold running 4.6 and BBM 4 (or whatever it was called). It was the option called "Allow now playing presence status."
