Default stupid question (bb pin)

hi guys im new to the blackberry world ;) and i have a question : how does the bb pin thingy work ? do i need any kind of data plan or wi fi or anything for the bb messenger and bb pin features to work ? thanks a lot x carolina

to my knowledge, bbm and pins are like aol instant messenger and your pin is your screen name. i have verizon, and i can't even buy a blackberry unless i pay for a data plan that's at least 30 dollars a month. i dont think its wi-fi capable only because they make you pay for the 30 dollars a month so why would you ever need wifi? my conclusion is that i think you would just need "service" for bbm messenger to work but how would you get one without a data plan?

If you're in a location without coverage or you want a faster connection than the carrier's network offers.
