Default sleep/standby mode/button??

Please Login to Remove!

I dont own a blackberry yet (owner in a week ),
but how do I put a blackberry to sleep immediately? (more specifically the 8520, cause i'm getting that one) to save power.

or does it go to sleep automatically? If it goes to sleep on its own, thats got to be annoying waiting for it everytime.....

SLEEP as in, standby mode; when you arent using the phone.

Its the middle one.
The middle button is also MUTE, as seen by the line through the speaker icon.
The MUTE button IS the standby button.
Press and Hold, till it notifies you on the screen.

Ahh i see.

If I press and hold to make it sleep, does that mean everything will be muted AS WELL, or is that the way to send the phone to sleep mode?

Thats the way to send into sleep mode.
Pressing mute in anything but a phone call does nothing

On the 8520, pressing the Mute/Media button (not holding it donw) will open the Media folder when not in a phone call.

True, but it won't MUTE anything but a phone call, is what I meant.

Thanks.

So I am guessing putting in standby/sleep is what everyone does often, correct (as in we are in the same page)? (when not using the phone, putting in your pocket... etc)

Some of use would like to permanently disable them.. I use a holster and can't stand the "standby" irritating button.

I always use standby before putting it in my pocket. If you use a holster, you also use standby.
I just updated my 8530 to OS 5.0.0.459 and the Media/Mute button functionality was changed slightly.

When coming out of standby a quick tap on the button takes you directly to the Media folder. A slightly longer press is like the old functionality and takes you where you were when you put it into standby.

100% incorrect. When in the holster, it uses "In Holster" mode. I don't have to hit the stupid standby key on the top of the BB when I remove it from the holster. In Holster is NOT the same as standby.

Now i'm officially confused.

What do you guys do when you put your phone in your pocket???

Surely you don't wait for the screen to automatically go off after 30 seconds or whatever time you have set.

I meant lock/standby/sleep, whatever that term is.

Understood. Tone doesn't always translate well in written messages. It was meant jokingly. Hopefully that's how you took it.

I don't use a cover, case or holster--I put the BB in my pocket. I always use standby mode. Lock mode would work too, but it's easier for me to get it out of standby by pressing the top button once. To come out of lock, I have to press *, then Send and for some reason I always have a little trouble getting that right the first time. Also, I understand Standby is better for battery life.

I always use a holster and never - ever - put my BlackBerry unprotected in my pocket.

Lock = you lock the phone, no buttons can be pressed (cept those to unlock) and the phone stays on
Standby/Sleep = The phone goes into a state of sleep (like a PC), uses less battery, also locks the phone, so only the standby button can awake it.

If not using a holster, most people would lock the phone. Others would standby the phone.
The rest use a holster.
