Brother don't post here.

If you want your device unlocked, either call your carrier or use a reputable unlocking service, such as HorizonWirelessOnline.com - Horizon Wireless, The World’s Cellular Repair Center .

The advantage is that you can use the device you like on another network.

If you purchase a 9700 from AT&T, you can have it unlocked and use it on T-Mobile, Rogers Wireless, Vodaphone, etc.

You just need a SIM card, and most carriers will give it you for free for having service with them.

Well you would already need to have a SIM card from the provider you are trying to activate it to. The point of unlocking is, for example, to use an AT&T phone with a Rogers SIM card.

Unlock phone let you use any type of sim card. They are also very expensive because non contract phone without data plan requirement.

There is no difference using an unlocked BlackBerry vs. a carrier-locked one. They will both function identically. The only difference is that with an unlocked BlackBerry you can use it with a carrier other than the one that originally sold it. For that reason, the unlocked one will usually get a better price at resale.

I really, really, really like my 8830 it fits my hands better then any other. you think that 9630 guts would fit in my 8830 housing.

They might, if you squash them down a little

Unfortunately too many of the internal hard points won't match up with a Tour guts inside an 88xx housing. I agree that my old 8820 had the best feel of any BlackBerry I've ever owned. I upgraded to a Bold 9000 for the camera, and because the 88xx series is now a legacy series and won't see the kind of development and support that newer models will. I doubt the 88xx will ever see OS 5. Heck, I doubt they'll even see OS 4.6.
